Many people's first impression of a private sale comes from what it is not: no countdown, no bidding paddle, no hammer. It is closer to a sequence of item-by-item confirmations — you ask, we answer; you wish to see, we arrange; you confirm, and only then does the process move one step forward. This guide follows the real order of a private sale, from the first enquiry to delivery.

Step one: make an enquiry

Everything starts with a specific question. You can enquire about a lot directly from its detail page, or reach us through the contact page or by email: which piece you are following, and what you would like to know. We will reply based on the material currently available, including relevant information, detailed images and document descriptions. There is no obligation at this stage — the more specific the question, the more useful the answer.

Step two: review the documentation

Next comes reading through the four kinds of material — provenance, condition, certificates and accompanying items. Ask whenever something is unclear; where the available material cannot answer, we will help confirm with the consignor, or state which parts require further independent professional review. There is no rush at this step — once the main questions raised by the documentation have been addressed, you can decide whether to move on.

Step three: book a private viewing

For high-value pieces, we recommend seeing the object before deciding: in person, or by video for the areas that matter most. If you are not in Hong Kong, you can ask about other viewing arrangements, each confirmed individually. A viewing is not a commitment to buy — viewing without buying is a completely normal outcome.

Step four: confirm the terms

Only after you decide to proceed does the conversation turn to terms: price, commission, payment method and timing, each confirmed in writing. The applicable commission and any other fees are subject to the information stated on the lot page and in the final written confirmation. If any item remains unclear, the process can pause while it is discussed further.

Step five: delivery and beyond

Delivery is arranged in Hong Kong by default. Shipping, insurance, customs duties and taxes, invoicing and acceptance follow our Private Enquiry & Delivery Guide and are confirmed individually in writing. If delivery elsewhere can be arranged, the terms are set out in writing before payment. Before delivery, the agreed responsibilities, costs and arrangements are recorded in writing.

The essence of a private sale is not speed, but that every step is on the record.
