November. 2020 Childhood experiences, society, and political issues are all motifs that compose the spontaneous and doodle- like drawings of Michael Scoggins. He works with paper, a very commonly used medium, as a means to summon a fresh point of view into his work. These off-the-shelf elements create an ideological recognition for people, which trigger taboos. However, Scoggins creates pieces that challenge and break this cognitive stereotype. Scoggins puts a lot of effort into making the paper that his drawings are based on. The time he spends making the paper alone takes more than a month. He draws blue and red lines on a large piece of paper, and pierces holes into it to give it the appearance of a page out of a lined notebook. It is sometimes crumpled or torn, and this gives it authenticity and variation, which allows his work to attain the value beyond a normal two-dimensional drawing—it is regarded as three-dimensional. Over the years, he has conducted many artistic experiments with a variety of tools. However, he realized that the only thing that he could completely express himself through was paper-based drawings. The “Michael S.” that makes an appearance in all of his drawings is the signature of his childhood persona, and it is even written in the same childish handwriting. The innocence of his childhood experiences is combined with fantasy, and this is the foundation for his work. Images of childish doodles, memos, or at times, letters conveying innocuous worries are drawn onto large pieces of paper, complete with blue and red lines and holes pierced into it to give it the appearance of a page out of a spiral bound notebook. The reason Scoggins works on these super-realistically enlarged pieces of paper are to give the people living in this chaotic age of virtual reality a sense of clarity and nostalgia. He wants viewers to feel the surprise one experiences when returning to a childhood location as an adult and realizing how small it actually was. The artist's earlier works are mostly based on cartoon images, but as his career progressed, he started to focus on text, and visually emphasize it to depict political and social issues. He covers serious issues, but the key to his work is to look at and interpret them from a child's point of view. Michael Scoggins studied painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and is receiving attention from collectors and art lovers throughout Paris, New York, Atlanta, and Miami. Starting with his first solo exhibition “Paper Work” in New York in 2004, his work became a part of many large collections, including that of MOMA and the Hammer Museum. He was a resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2003, who is known to only give opportunities to artists with academic and unique works. 。.
