In-person returned; online did not disappear

A survey of more than 2,700 HNW collectors across 11 markets found a strong return to in-person buying without the disappearance of online channels.

In-person buying rebounded

In the first half of 2022, 74% had bought at an art fair, up from 54% in 2021; 65% had bought through an in-person event, up from 37%.

Online remained inside a hybrid model

Some 93% bought through a gallery or dealer. Dealer channels represented 45% of spending and auctions 17%. For dealer purchases, 42% preferred a gallery visit and 37% online; for fairs, 66% preferred live events and 34% online viewing rooms.

Sustainability entered collection decisions

Some 77% considered more sustainable options, up from 62% in 2019; 57% were willing to pay up to 25% more for options that reduced environmental impact. This indicates greater consideration, not a universal premium.
